Given that the driver works when compiled through imake (as intended), you should report this problem to the NetBSD folk who, for reasons of their own, decided to re-invent the wheel WRT how XFree86 is compiled.
Agreed, and thanks for the tip on the Makefile -- it'll help me track down the fix.
