Slackware 8.0 is quite old. Are you using XFree86 4.1 ? Search for lines with EE ou WW in /var/log/XFree86.log. Have you tried XFree86 -configure ? Try the fbdev driver in the "Device" section of your configuration file (/etc/X11/XF86Config or something like that : see the log file) Check in the "Monitor" section the values of VertRefresh and HorizSync according to your hardware.
