I was able to redirect the output to a file, and saw
that the bitmapped fonts were seen by xlsfont, but not
the scalable fonts.
So if xlsfont cannot see them, I assume GTK and
WxWindows will not see them.
Next I will look at why KDrive/TinyX cannot see my
scalable fonts listed in fonts.dir.
