Hi,

I'm new to the list. I've been searching the net for days, but unable to find similar issues out there. I am using XFree86 4.5.0 on a small embedded power-pc (ppc) platform. I compiled X natively and everything went fine. After the make install, I did a startx. My windows appear as expected,
but my fonts are all messed up / hosed / horked. I am not using xfs.

Everything else seems to work fine. I can play movies with mplayer, and they look normal. Apps like xeyes work fine. Interestingly enough, xcalc displayed its normal screen, but all of its text looked like mirror-images. In other words, the "6" looks like a "a" and the "2" looks like a "s" and the parens mirror each other so "(" looks like ")" and the other ")" looks like "(". The "fixed" font appears to be better, looking like mirror images. Other fonts (i.e. xterm -fn whatever) just give me garbage as my command prompt, but mostly blanks and empty box symbols.

Perhaps this is an endianness issue because my "X" cursor was wrong, too. It appears as a diamond rather than an "X". I changed the device driver code for hardware cursor so that it endian-swaps the data rather than using memcpy, and the "X" now appears normal with hwcursor, but still a diamond for
swcursor.

I find this rather odd, since the entire environment was compiled and installed natively. I've got to believe it works fine on other ppc-based platforms like mac or more people would be screaming.

My graphics chip, the silicon motion sm712, is attached via a PCI bus to my big-endian ppc
so I'm using the siliconmotion_drv.o device driver.

Other interesting notes:
If I use VNC server on the ppc, everything looks fine from the viewer (a different system). If I take a screen-shot and display it on a different system, the mirror-image fonts are still mirror-image.

The bug is probably somewhere in my sm712 device driver, but I'm just not seeing it, and I don't know enough about how xfree86 does font rendering to tell which routines in the driver are even being used.

My xf86config file and output are given below. Any help will be appreciated.
