This isn't Xindice's problem, it's XML's problem in general. All
XML applications must deal with the legacy software and assumptions
coming from HTML, where ä was "defined" (in reality, the ability
to properly handle character entities was hardwired into the browsers,
which had no SGML or XML parser whatsoever, still don't when it comes
to handling web pages).
Like many things, when there's no definition for something it's
pretty hard to know what it is. And computers are notoriously
stupid about needing definitions.
