I'm trying to start xindice 1.0 on an OS X Mac with Java 1.3.1.
After setting the JAVA_HOME and XINDICE_HOME variables xindice gave me 
a big
hallo with the following:
I do not have any problems with MacOSX. I don't have to change anything 
to start the server. Everything is done by the shell script.

Only for starting the clients successfully I have to define the 
XINDICE_HOME.
