I may be off track but I'm aware that most linuxphiles & gate 
(winiphiles) fans synergy Xindice app & Tomcat using Cocoon as a pipeline
Just by droppping a war file into the WEB-INF etc etc If you trying to 
use a  Servlet to serve Xindice I can't assist you.

But the former is a great and simple exercise to run  Xindice with 
Coccon & Tomcat.
