I solved this by putting my local network into smtprelay.tab (which allows me to send without authentication), then turning on:
"EnableAuthSMTP-POP3" "1" in the server.tab file. Then I have all my external mail clients enable SMTP authentication in their mail client software. There may be other, better ways - but this one works for me...
