I've seen the same thing happen with XMail 1.17 when I had no filters set up. Running SpamAssassin definitely reduces the frequency of the problem. As far as I can tell, certain spam messages seem to knock out XMail. Not really sure exactly which ones, though. I usually clean out the spool as soon as XMail crashes, and then it works fine again.

There is my XMail-SMTPFLAVS running as a post-data filter and I cannot guarantee that the bug is not there.
