Even better, I deleted the stuck messages (except for the one in 18/0 that I referred to below) using XQM and they all re-appeared, I brought down the XMail server and then deleted them again (except the one), and then brought Xmail back up again. They stayed gone and when I retrieved my mail, it downloaded the one I didn't delete and it's gone now from the server too.
We'll see if they stay gone.
