It seems xmail (only suspected, not sure) switch back to use 'A' pointers
for target domains when encourating some connectivity problems to the target
domain EVEN if xmail is configured to use a smartdnshost AND the
smartdnshost get the good mx list for the target domain AND xmail dnscache
file (so the dns response) for the target domain is correct too AND the
target dns zone IS correct with GOOD mx's pointers (no cnames, all servers
exist, ...).
Seems it is exactly you problem here.

Using 1.21 for only some months back (to use new pre/post smtp filters like
glst) I had similar problems with multiple xmail 'outgoing' configurations
(without anything special xmail parameters, or just with smartdnshost entry,
just with smtpfw.tab like you to direct some traffic to specific domains
having dns zone problems, with both ...)

Previously, I used only 1.17 (because I didn't implement any xmail filters)
configured with a smtpfw.tab with one line : "*"[TAB]"<local_basic_mta_ip>"
to redirect all traffic to a AV gateway, so I never encourated problems (the
av gateway do all the sending job with no problems).

Actually, on 1.21, to workaround this sort of problem, I have to switch back
to with 'old' method (using a simple Microsoft SMTP service from IIS and the
iis/smtp use exactly the same dns server. In this configuration, I have no
problems for outgoing delivery ...

At this time I conduct some configurations tests (and dns and smtp protocols
captures) on a 'test' xmail server with no smptfw.tab entries, using
different dns servers (microsoft or not) as smartdnshost, with different
local tcp/ip dns configurations, ...).
Similar problem reports was posted to the list but no complete tests/reports
was done so before re-opening the 'thread' for this problem I want to get
more pertinent infos, samples, logs, ...
