I agree with Davide RFC not only apply to MTA but to MUA too and to final users too (programs or humans) :) As the MUA interacts with the user, it's to the MUA responsibility to correct the user (automaticaly or not) if users can't be made RFC compliant ( hard to achieve :) ).
