I've noticed that certain games like Metal Slug don't run full speed
on my machine using xmame.x11 if my desktop is set to 32-bit color.
Changing it to 16-bit color gets it running full speed. The thing
is that I use DGA and it seems like I ought to be able to tell Xmame
to use a 16-bit screen depth on the DGA screen, but I don't see any
way to do that. After all, there really is no point right now in
running any Mame game at depths greather than 16-bits anyways (and
internally it's 16-bit max too if I'm not mistaken).
So, is there any way to tell it to use a screen depth of 16-bits
when Xmame runs DGA (so that I can keep on using a 32-bit color
desktop without impeding Xmame performance)? If not, I would like
to suggest that as a feature to add to Xmame. I think the .xfx
version already switches on my system to 16-bits because the drivers
for my Voodoo3 card force it to (according to the terminal though,
Xmame.xfx still thinks it's going to a 24-bit screen).
Also, does anyone know if the svgalib version of the 3dfx driver can
work at all outside of X-windows? I get a "can't find
banshee/voodo3 card" error when I try to run it outside of X. The
Linux 3dfx site leads me to believe it can't run any glide stuff
outside of X, but then I don't see what the point of having a
svgalib version of the 3dfx driver would be if it can't?
Thanks,
Gordon
