For those of you having problems with these gamepads.
One fix is to only plug one of these pads into your computer as the
version of the sidewinder driver in the 2.4 series kernel at the moment
has problems with more than one gamepad, causing the buttons not to
work. Then use mame with joytype 4, to enable all buttons.

For a proper fix get the latest sidewinder.c file via CVS from the CVS
tree at linuxconsole.sourceforge.net. Overwrite the one in your 2.4
kernel tree, and recompile and install the kernel modules. You can now
use more than one sidewinder with linux. You will still need joytype 4
with xmame, but this should fix sidewinder problems with other apps too.

I don't subscribe to this list so don't ask me for help, but I noticed
your problems in the archives so I thought I would try to help
