X-video is an X standard as old as the hills (somewhere in
the order of a decade, IIRC!), but didn't get decent exposure
until XFree86 started to support it.

They're both pretty standard nowadays, and wracking my brain
I find it hard to reason that one is now more prevailant than
the other in terms of hardware support (sure most people have
a 3d card and most of THOSE in the hands of X users have DRI
support or similar, but the majority of those cards also have
Xv support plus an array of older 2d-oriented cards for the
sticklers have Xv but no decent GL).
