Well, the new protocol is ready and seems to be working pretty well;
a friend and I used it to play Metal Slug through to the end. In theory
it ought to tolerate latency better than the previous version, but that was
hard to observe on the LAN I've been using (I should look into using Linux'
traffic shaper, but I think that's only available in kernel 2.4...). I'd
appreciate the information if anyone has a chance to try it out on a slow
connection -- even if it still isn't playable, there should be a noticeable
improvement. Thanks in advance.

Caveats:
. Only tested with 2 players.
. Desync can still occur if the different emulated machines have
different initial states; the most likely culprit would be NVRAM. If you
get desync, try deleting ~/.xmame/nvram/<game>.nv on both machines.
. Documentation is lagging...
