I have a geforce2, via mb and athlon. When i first installed nvidia's GL stuff, I had some lock-ups when starting/exiting X or when switching to/from the console. This was caused by the framebuffer device in the kernel. Recompiling without it solved the problem. I dont know if this is the same problem as yours, but you should try.
