0.36 beta 16 was the last mame release in the 30s series.. originally
mame had a development pattern of a release, then many betas, then a few
RCs and a final release.

at some point during the 0.36 (i think) beta cycle (probably beta 16) they decided to 
drop the 0.36 b 16 and think of it as 0.52, the next release was 0.53.

any 30s remnants are probably MESS-related older versions hanging
around.
