i jus t realized something obvious i hadn't tried. I've had agpgart compiled directly into the kernel. i just recompiled it as a module and set the Nvidia drivers to use NVAGP instead of AGPGART (like i should have done all along). I'd been wrongly assuming this was the default. it's not.
