I don't think xmess follows the windows mess directory structure. And
looking at the xmessrc, I don't think it can even be forced to follow that.
Anyways, I keep my bios files zipped up in the directory I keep the roms.
and I can call xmess(0.56) like so:

/usr/local/bin/xmess.x11 a7800 -cart "Crossbow (1988) (Atari).a78" -rp
"/windows/Emulators/7800/7800Ren/"

I had a lot of trouble with xmess at first too. If you have KDE libs
installed, try kemulator. It currently supports using 5200, 7800, apple
2c/e, nes, sms, coleco, and genesis I believe. For 2600, it uses stella,
since i think the mess 2600 is broken. Thats how I came up with a working
commandline. The only catch is, if you build a DGA version of xmess, you
need to edit kemulators src files. It wants to put in a "-fullscreen" or
"-nofullscreen" option. I'm guessing thats for SDL or something, but I only
use DGA and it won't start up if you try and pass it those options. Also,
for whatever reason, my zip file is a7800.zip, but the file inside it is
7800.rom. Dunno if that matters, but if it ain't broke, I don't fix it. ;)
