Yeah, zipmax comes configured for 7zip (www.7-zip.com). 7zip is open source,
but I don't see a linux port on his sourceforge page. I ran a quick
comparison on Metal Slug 3 roms:

bhg:/tmp/mslug3> du -h *.zip
77M mslug3-7zip.zip
77M mslug3-linux.zip
77M mslug3-win.zip

bhg:/tmp/mslug3> dir *.zip
78072 -rw-r--r-- 1 nick nick 79857570 Mar 18 15:16
mslug3-7zip.zip
78812 -rw-r--r-- 1 nick nick 80616929 Mar 18 14:41
mslug3-linux.zip
78812 -rw-r--r-- 1 nick nick 80616385 Mar 18 14:45 mslug3-win.zip

Now compression ratios change based on the file content your compressing.
Keeping that in mind, this may not be a totally fair comparison, since I
only tried one very large romset. In this case I used 'zip -9' under Linux
(Zip 2.3), In Winzip (8.1) I told it to use maximum compression, and for
7zip I used '7za -tzip foo.zip files -mx'. In this comparison, the
difference is somewhat negligable. If someone wants to take the time to do a
random sampling of Mame roms and make some kind of chart comparing the three
archivers, I'd be interested to see if there is any major advantage to
re-zipping all your Mame roms with 7zip.
