I found this post on a mame list:

Subject: Crosshair not registering hits on Win XP
Posted on 04/03/02 10:17 PM

In many light gun games (Hogan's Alley, etc.) there is a crosshair controlled
by the mouse, joystick, etc. and when it is placed over a 'baddie' and the
trigger is hit, the hit doesn't register.

I was told in this forum that it is indeed a bug and will be fixed in a new
version of Mame and Mame32. I have been waiting for months (almost a year).
When will it be fixed??
