What error (if any) do you get ?

You need to do the following:-

1) cd <directory where you COMPILED the new version of xmame
2) ./xmame -rompath <FULL PATH TO GAME> GAME

e.g  ./xmame -rompath /usr/lib/games/xmame/roms scramble
