I'll make some more rearrangements for the next build.  As for the 
optimization, -O2 and the other flags seemed reasonable for people who 
don't want to modify the makefile, but I could trim it back to -O and 
remove some of the other flags to ensure that they get a stable build.  
The speed hit probably wouldn't be noticeable anyway..
