You might want to try "The XFree86 Modeline Generator" at: http://xtiming.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/xtiming.pl
It's really the best there is IMHO. It points out common mistakes when something is wrong, and It even has a built-in non 4:3 aspect ratio calculator that's especially useful with xmame. The only cryptic value you have to enter is your "Maximum Dot Clock Frequency", but if you look at your xfree86 logs hard enough you should find it. Happy modeline generating!
