I dunno - the widescreen is definately the go for movies, but aren't most games in a 4:3 aspect ratio ? So it will only use the middle of the screen. I guess I'd go widescreen anyway, 4:3 is on it's way out.
I'm currently using a nice Mitsu. 52" for playing MAME on. Got a nice Nvidia card with a s-vid out plugs right in.
The only problem I have it at higher resolutions (like above 800x600) it SUCKS. (If I had the money, I would find a card that could do HD out)
Your TV can't handle anthing much more than 720x576 (PAL), so there will be quite a bit of scaling involved anyway. That said, my laptop (and old & creaky dell) does a not-bad 1024x768 cut-down to tv.
In my cabinet I have a 51cm cheap-brand TV. I run it at 800x600 and use a 'LifeView' VGA->TV dongle. The picture is OK when playing games, but you have ot use quite large fonts on the front-end to be able to read it easily. The dongle connects via S-video, and I'm thinking the picture would be betetr if the video card has TVout built in.
