hi folks,

any news on running xmame successfully+usefully on xinerama setups? i'm
trying to use Xv for the first time and that is successful, according to
the startup output at least:

Using a Visual with a depth of 24bpp.
MIT-SHM & XV Extensions Available. trying to use... Success.
Using Xv & Shared Memory Features to speed up
Actual bits per pixel = 32... Ok
Using 16bpp video mode

my setup is xfree86 4.3.0 on debian 3.0, kernel 2.4.23, with a permedia 2
PCI card and a quadro2 AGP card, 2.5ghz p4. the permedia card drives a
monitor on the left, and the quadro 2, a larger monitor on the right.
unfortunately the permedia card just isn't up to the task of driving my
desktop at a reasonable resolution, so there is flicker on that (left)
screen whenever there is motion (animation) on it. the amount of motion
in xmame turns it into a snowstorm so i cannot play on that monitor.
however the second (righthand) monitor works fine and i'd love to display
xmame on that.
all of the below occur no matter if i use fvwm or afterstep. sadly i
cannot install svgalib here, or rather, i can, but cannot make the
xmame binary suid root, to take advantage of it.

there are 3 different ways in which xmame (using xv) fails to work
usefully for my setup:

1) using -x11-mode 3, the "fullscreen" is in fact "fulldesktop",
taking over both monitors. aside from not actually being useful since
i have two different resolutions on the two different monitors, only
the first (left) monitor displays any output. the right monitor shows
blankness and the enterprise cursor can wander thru the inky darkness.
the left monitor, in a snowstorm, shows approximately the left third of
pacman, which cuts off right at the edge of the monitor.

2) using -x11-mode 2, the window pops up on the left desktop, at
approximately 2x scale (i don't specify anything in my .xmamerc, and
my full command line is only xmame.x11 -x11-mode X -rp /path/to/roms)
snowstorm ensues. i can drag "normal" windows from one screen to the
other and xmame/Xv is also draggable, but once it crosses to the right
side monitor, i get no display, only the black box. taking it back
left restores the game display as expected

3) using -x11-mode 2 -geometry +1200+0 (to place it solidly on the
"correct" screen) the window that shows up is only 1x scale (compared
to the ~2x with no -geometry being the only config change), and shows
up on the left screen regardless. dragging it to the right has the
same effects described above.

my goal is to have xmame.x11 running fullscreen on the right screen.
i don't particularly care if the left screen is blanked during this,
but trying to use the left screen for display of anything that moves
and that i'd like to be able to see is futile.

any suggestions? i'm not tied to XV, but we do not have hardware GL
support here, nor can i use dga if it still requires the binary to be
suid. playing in a tiny window is of course possible but is last-ditch..
for some reason using -scale 2 leaves me bouncing between 100% and 66%
framerate (on pacman) which the frameskipping tries to correct for but
leaves the display very jerky. my next best bet is trying to debug that
further but even at 2x the window's still kinda small and more requires
a high constant frameskip.

thanks in advance for your help!
