I actually got this same error when attempting to compile 0.77.1 a week or so ago. I figured I'd wait to see if 0.78.1 fixed it, but it apparently is still happening:

Compiling src/vidhrdw/konamiic.c ...

Anyone seen this before? Is my nasm perhaps not new enough or something (I'm using version 0.98.36)? The only reference I could find as to what version of nasm to use was in makefile.unix, where it says you need 0.98 or higher.

Which version of GCC are you using?
