For some reason, the unix makefile is not recognizing files in the unix/ directory as being updated. I have to rm -fr xmess.obj/unix.x11/ in order for the new files to be built.
This is one of the dependency weirdnesses I've been meaning to look at. I think in the meantime you can also just delete osdepend.a to get make to rebuild the touched files.
