The problem seems to be caused by OOM killer of Linux kernel 2.4 or 2.6. OOM (out of memory) killer is a way to free memory for new processes when the system is out of RAM and swap space. How much RAM and swap have your laptop? Please, after linking fails, type "dmesg" in the prompt and look at the end of output for messages like "VM: killing process ld".
