I just tried SDLMESS ..110. After some initial adaptation on my part, it just might substitute someday for XMESS. However, as most of you know, the speed just isn't there, yet. Even with OpenGL enabled (ATI's fglrx), XMESS .106 is MUCH faster than SDLMESS .110. Hans, do you have a frame of time in mind when SDLMESS's speed will match XMESS? In the meantime, XMESS .106 works well for me. However, I don't need TWO different emulators so I'd like to get rid of one or the other ASAP.
There has lately been done some performance improvements in sdlmXXX with regards to opengl and the extremely crappy fglrx driver, which for some reason only supports the totally braindead RGBA 5551 format for 16 bpp textures. With this speedup sdlmess should be about on par with xmess, keep in mind though that the major graphics changes in MAME's core have made MXXX a few percent slower in general. Also you could concider switching to the new opensource DRI drivers for radeon cards unless you have a very new card (r5xx chip family is not supported). For example Fedore Core 6 supports all not very new ati cards with HW 3d out of the box.
