At Wednesday's meeting of SGML UK, the British chapter of the International SGML/XML Users Group, we saw an interesting demo from a Dutch company called E-Novation which showed MS Outlook being used to exchange, using standard e-mail protocols, both EDI and XML/EDI messages. The EDI messages were "translated" into XML for display, within Outlook, using the IE5 browser. Facilities for validating messages, and reporting errors in messages, were all carried out within Outlook using XML. At the moment this interesting beta demo is not remotely accessible, but in the next week or so you should be able to find out more about it at www.lifeline.nl. The idea of integrating XML/EDI processes "within" standard mailing systems is well worth considering. The software involved is designed to be of general applicability, though initially it will be applied in a Dutch healthcare environment.
