Yes, this does open some interesting alternatives to text entities. In the past I used them for 'variables' such as company name, product name and product version. I guess I could create an XML file with each of these items defined as some type of inline element, then insert references to them in the actual document 'file entities'. One advantage would be that all such variables could be stored in a single XML file for the release. This is more convenient than having to define them in the doctype area of each top-level XML file (typically one per book).
