The unxxe.pl script that I posted to this list a few days ago will 
substitute é for é, but it cannot substitute é for ? 
(and I won't be adding that feature myself - I've spent far too much 
time on the script as it is).

If you select US-ASCII as the encoding for saved files, following the 
directions Hussein Shafie gave, XXE will write é rather than ?, and 
you can use unxxe.pl to convert these to the named entities.

I'll send unxxe.pl to Michel Kergoat separately, to avoid extra traffic 
on the list.
