Ah! My mistake, I didn't notice the leading "addon/" in the "addon/ 
custom" directories mentioned on pages like 
http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/_distrib/doc/configure/customizing.html 
  when I was madly skimming the documentation looking for how to add  
custom content to the XSLT templates. In my defense, this is a huge,  
richly complex world into which I only occasionally dip my toes.

In any case, thanks so much for your response, and for offering such  
an impressively useful editor. I've ordered my Professional license.
