Very feasible. We have started working on it. See attached screen shot.
(This formula has been entirely typed in XXE and, even without the help
of a Math toolbar/pane, it was pretty smooth to do so.)

However, it will take a *long* *time* to be really usable:

* The first version will just allow to edit MathML standalone documents,
something which is not really useful.

* The second version requires XXE v4. XXE v4, among other new features,
should be able to dynamically merge configurations (that is, schema,
CSS, menus, toolbars, etc).

With this feature you don't need to manually define configurations such
as XHTML+MathML, DocBook5+MathML, etc.

Just install the MathML add-on and open a DocBook 5 document (which
natively supports ``foreign'' mml:math elements). When you'll insert a
mml:math element, XXE v4 will automatically do its magic.

Important:

* We do not intend to style MathML content markup, but just MathML
presentation markup.

* The MathML add-on will not work in free Personal Edition. (Sorry but
we need to pay the rent each month.)

* The rendering of MathML when the XML document is to be converted to
other formats (HTML, PDF, etc) will be delegated to the "JEuclid image
toolkit plug-in". (This already works.)
