My preference would be if the software did not try to automatically
install in alternate directory. If preferences is set to to install in
particular location , then it should only install in said location.

It makes it easier to document where  stuff is on a machine especially
when rebuilding a machine.

Of course, this is the right thing to do.

However I thought that when a user installing an add-on didn't have
sufficient rights to install the add-on in XXE_install_dir/addon/, then
XXE automatically installed the add-on in
XXE_user_preferences_dir/addon/. Well, it seems that we have to retest
this feature.
