After waiting three years for this patch to be applied I'd like it to be known that I'm suprised, and not a little disappointed that this issue should be resolved WONTFIX. It is not for me to tell you what you should and shouldn't do, but I would have thought that the Apache way was to review and apply patches, not to ignore them for three years and then reject them without any reason.

Consequently, I assume that there is no true interest in this functionality. Additionally, I for myself do find no reason for an alternative way to specify credentials. I am closing the issue now.
