Xvfb used to do precisely this, and it was frankly quite useful for
debugging as you could examine the framebuffer contents even while the
server was stopped in gdb.

Of course, you don't get any guarantee about what you'll get if you read
directly from the frame buffer, but with the damage extension, you
should be able to eventually get all of the updates to the screen.
