Passing in the size of the array but using it as "number of elements" inside
the function. Rename a bunch of arguments to avoid this.

Martin: this is the same basic change as your patch in 107166, but a lot
more garnish to change from the ambiguous "sz" to the less ambiguous
"nelem".
