I suspect the driver is not able to get an edid for the monitor. If it doesn't get one, it'll just end up getting the default modes. you can use xrandr to manually add a mode: xrandr --addmode VGA-0 1280x1024 regarding the edid, two factors could be at work. Either we are using the wrong ddc line or we need to adjust the i2c timing a bit.
