My apologies for being so slow; I was testing other things, but I should have
given this to you first.

The "EXAPixmaps" issue turned out to be my fault; I had typed
Options "EXAPixmaps" "off"
rather than
Option "EXAPixmaps" "off"
I'm now beginning to recognize that "burnt paper" screen as indicative of an
xorg.conf error.
