I indeed don't use KDE on a regular basis, but I do try it every now and then, and it doesn't seem to perform as badly for me as you're describing it. As I've seen similar comments from others, I wonder if there's something weird on your system wrt the raster backend. We are taking this problem seriously, but we obviously can't drop everything else because of it.
