hi,

i'm crossposting to both xorg and gentoo amd64 mailing list to have
more audience since the problem might be related to either gentoo or
xorg itself.

on sunday i've updated hal on gentoo and after reboot xorg stopped
starting. the problem was that it cannot open the drm device. on
monday i was using the 2.6.26-gentoo-r1 kernel with a patch applied
(i've already had the same problem some time ago) for it to work, but
on the same kernel after hal upgrade i haven't been able to have xorg
open the drm device.
first i've tried compiling the new 2.6.27-gentoo-r1 kernel but the
problem is still there with both xorg-server from git and xorg-server
from gentoo official repository. after downgrading i've tried out the
downgraded 1.5 version on the old 2.6.26 kernel build but still got
the same error.
as drm module i use the libdrm kernel module (x11-drm) compiled for
radeon boards.
i've tried downgrading to the old hal version but still no luck.

i now use the official ~amd64 packages on 2.6.27-gentoo-r1 kernel with
radeon or radeonhd driver. i suspect the problem to be somewhere
between the x11-drm and kernel drm module.

i'm not able to give more info since i don't have the pc in question
at hand for some hours and i've got no livecd at the moment to have
some decent browser for posting the logs and configs, but i'd like to
know if someone has some hints to give on what to look out for so that
i can post everything together.

thanks
