Ping and update: Several times, 2 to 3 minutes after quitting the browser,
I have heard 15 to 30 seconds of the delayed, extremely chopped up audio.
My impression was that what I was hearing had the correct pitch, but was
the same as the video, where a 2 minute commercial in front of a news story
I wanted to watch, typically played through to the end in 20 to 30 seconds,
with spastic pauses of 2 seconds mixed in with 10x normal speed playback,
and which then froze the video when the elapsed time at the bottom of the
wind was saying 9 seconds had been played. The audio was small piece of a
word, skip ahead 10 words but 3 seconds of silence in between the snippets.

So last night I gave up and put the GS8400 nvidia card back in. X of
course had to reconfigure, and its working much better now. Not flawlessly
by any means, but the gist of a news story is now usually detectable. And
the audio is much closer to staying in lip sync now.

When configuring a fresh kernel build, it seems to work better if I use
HPET, but with tickless turned off and a 300 hz tick speed instead.

Another place in the make xconfig defaults the audio buffer to 64 bytes,
but then comments that pulse users, probably need to set it for 2048 bytes.
That also helps, enough that before I try rebooting to 3.13.1 again, I'll
reset that to 4096 bytes.

Is there now a new, ideal standard setting for this "tick setting"?

This effect when the ati HD 2400-Pro was installed, was not effected by the
installation and reconfiguring of X to use the flgx driver. And FWIW,
neither version of glxgears would do anything but segfault. Very
frustrating. Now running the nouveau driver, glxgears is also segfaulting.

How do I approach troubleshooting that? Every segfault report in the logs
says its:
glxgears[23226]: segfault at 4 ip b7701ef6 sp bfb61ca0 error 4 in
libGL.so.1.2[b769c000+a7000]

And its also doing it with the nvidia card back in, running the nouveau
driver.

Thanks.

Cheers, Gene
