Xperts,

I've just read several archive posts regarding DVI and X but none
answer the questions I have. Sorry for the length but what you tell
me will determine what I buy so I want to give you sufficient info and
not make mistakes.

I need to extend the video capabilities of my linux system for some
visual system experiments I'm doing. Cost is not (too much of) an
issue. Functionality _is_.

I have a dual cpu linux system
(Motherboard: Tyan Tiger S2466 MPX, 4x AGP, 512 MB memory,
dual 1500+ Athlon processors (1.33 GHz each))
running Mandrake 8.1 / KDE.

1) I need to purchase several DVI-D LCD panels of different resolutions
(1600x1200 highest, 1024x768 lowest) and a video card capable of
driving these on this linux system. Only one panel will be in
   use at a time.

2) I must be able to run "dual head" with the other (left) head being
a 1600x1200 PanaSync S21 ordinary CRT monitor. This is currently on a
Matrox G450 on the above system but I'm willing to pitch this card
if I need another one (or two).

3) I would like to have high-speed 3D graphics capability.

4) I would like to be able to play DVDs (in real time) and digitally
process segments of the data (I do video/image processing
   research).

(1) and (2) are "musts", (3) is a "would _really_ like"
and (4) is a "would like".

Questions:

a) Is there a single card that is capable of fulfilling 1-4? (Which card?)

b) If not, is there any other way to proceed? (Which cards?)

b) For a DVI-D panel, is specifying the resolution sufficient to determine
the mode-line to use or can two panels with the same resolution have
   different mode-lines?

c) Items (3) and (4) should take place on the panel. If they can
also be done on the the CRT, that's icing on the cake.

Remarks:

Part the research is to study aspects of the temporal response of
the panels with "smoothly evolving" graphics. Hence
the need for item (3).

Open source is preferable but if you tell me that this all can be done
(guaranteed!) with such-and-such Nvidia card and the closed-source
drivers, I'll go that route.

I've used linux for three years, but am in no way an "xpert" in X. So
please take the extra moment and explain things in a bit more detail
than you might with an "xpert".

Having stated my ignorance, I'll ask one more set of questions: Do I
need two cards to run dual-head in the mode I've described? If so,
then what do I do about having only one "AGP" slot on my motherboard?
Can I run the other (slower?) card in a PCI slot?

Many thanks in advance.

Dean
