I've recently installed Slack8 on my system and it includes XFree86 4.1.0... I
installed the XFree86 4.2.0 binaries
from the xfree86.org site, and it seems to work well
Only problem I'm having is that XFree86 4.2's ATI driver, no matter what video mode,
causes the screen to appear with
the upper edge of the screen stretched horizontally somewhat... while the rest of the
screen looks normal.
Trying the ati_drv.o and atimisc_drv.o from XF 4.1 it works fine, no stretchedness in
the screen...
Trying with the ati.2 drivers from the GATOS project, the ones compiled from XF 4.2.0
sources, does the same thing as the regular XF 4.2 drivers... the upper edge of the
screen is stretched.

FYI here's some info on my card:

first two lines of the entry in lspci -vv:
00:0c.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc 3D Rage Pro (rev 5c) (prog-if
00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 0061
