I would prefer OS drivers for reasons other than whether or not I plan to hack on them. What I would really like a pointer to is a data base of recent cards supported natively by X.

the real question Harold is Do you care if the source is available, i.e. to
modify it?
If not then the closed source issue is moot. I'd recommend letting your
usage tell
you which way to go.
