If you do this, do things start to work for you:
sudo mv /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app/Contents/MacOS/X11{,.sh}
sudo mv /Applications/Utilities/XQuartz.app/Contents/MacOS/X11{.bin,}

If so, you likely have some shell init script issues.  Do you have a ~/.bashrc 
or ~/.profile that might be causing problems?
