Sorry for the delay. This is still a rather difficult issue...
There are, at least, two possibilities for rendering an invalid icon for a
required value:
* the control has lost focus and is empty
* the user asked for submission of the empty node
Do you have in mind other possibilities??
There are currently 2 node metadata concerned with this situation:
* required
* invalid
I now think that a third would be helpful, something like "ignored-by-user". The
"invalid" flag would not be enough for the invalid icon to be displayed.
What do you think?
